10 things to know before you move into a retirement village

Friday, 28 July 2023

Are you considering the move to a village living, but you’re not sure what to expect? Here are 10 things you should know about taking the next exciting step in your life.

There’s so much to consider when deciding to move into a retirement community. Is village living the right choice for you? Will you like your new neighbours? How will you pack up a lifetime of memories to move into your new space?

While change can be scary, it can also be refreshing. There’s something liberating about a new beginning. And moving into one of our welcoming communities is the start of a vibrant future where you’ll make fresh new memories.

But it can be hard to understand what to expect. And we know you’ll have many worries and questions along the way. That’s why we're here to answer your questions and help you make an informed decision about your retirement living.

1. You can choose the option that best suits you

We offer a range of home types for you to choose from. These include freestanding or attached villas, independent living apartments, and serviced apartments. You can also choose from our ultra-premium luxury villages and several new developments around the country. From the style of home to the location of your village to the type of contract you sign, you're in control of your life, finances and future.

2. You have full transparency around fees and contracts

It’s important you know how things work and the financial implications of retirement village living. We encourage you to ask questions about our fees and contracts and learn about the deferred management fees. Feel free to speak to your trusted advisors and to us as you make your decision. And make sure you understand your contract before you sign so there are no surprises down the track.

3. You’re investing in a lifestyle

Buying into a retirement village is different to buying a family home. It’s not about space for the kids or making a fortune when you sell. It’s about investing in a rich and rewarding retirement that enhances your wellbeing. It's more than property. It's your key to a vibrant, social and welcoming neighbourhood - and a lifestyle you’ll love.

4. It’s a place to belong

You'll love the sense of belonging that comes with living in our communities. You’ll never feel lonely or isolated with new neighbours who become life-long friends and partners in living a vibrant village life.

And your family will enjoy the peace of mind of knowing there are friends looking out for you when they can’t be there.

5. Join in as much (or as little) as you’d like

While there are plenty of social activities and opportunities, you can get involved in as much or as little as you want. Some people love joining in all the activities, while some prefer to keep more to themselves. Whatever you choose, our villages are socially diverse independent-living environments where you get to live life your way.

6. It’s not aged care

The idea that retirement villages are for 'old' people is a serious misconception - they’re not aged care. Our residents are people from 55 years old to 90 plus, all living independently in thriving neighbourhoods.

Residents who make the move in their 50s and 60s do it because they can’t wait to start enjoying vibrant village living. And our residents in their 70s, 80s, and 90s are equally involved in the fun and friendship our villages provide.

7. You can make a difference

As a resident, you can have your say and make a difference in village life. Start a monthly movie club, launch a weekly exercise class or suggest a group trip to the theatre. We welcome new contributions and ways for residents to get involved in building the community they want to live in.

8. There’s support if you want it

While we’re not an aged care facility, we do offer support to help our residents live healthy lives. We run wellness programs and can connect you with medical and other health practitioners. Our approach is collaborative, holistic and completely customisable. Our support is there whenever you need us.

9. It’s safe and secure

As a village resident, you’ll rest easy knowing you’re in a safe and secure environment. And if you're a traveller, you’ll love the lock-up-and-leave convenience. You can head off on as many epic adventures as you like, knowing your home will be secure and the gardens will still be alive when you return.

10. Less maintenance means more living

When it comes to property repairs and maintenance, we take care of most of this as part of your monthly service fees. With fewer gardens to maintain, no exteriors to paint, and a smaller home to keep clean, you'll have more time to enjoy the retirement you’ve been looking forward to.

It’s a big move, but it’s worth it

Packing up the family home to move into a retirement village is a daunting task. But once you’ve sorted through the stuff, packed all the boxes and moved into your new community, you’ll wish you’d done it sooner.

As you settle into your new home, you’ll be proud to invite your friends and family to come and see for themselves. With excellent amenities, vibrant social activities and a neighbourhood of new friends, you’ll fall in love with the wonderful lifestyle you’ve so wisely invested in.
