Ageism has no place in our villages, but it is an important topic for communities like ours, where older adults are at the heart of everything. At Keyton, we’re all about making retirement a time to enjoy life to the fullest. After all, age is something to celebrate, not something to hold you back!
Ageism refers to stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination against individuals based on their age. It might look like assuming someone can’t do something because they’re “too old” or dismissing a young person as “too inexperienced.”
These attitudes, even when unintentional, can have an impact on a person's confidence and limit their opportunities. Negative views of ageing are associated with poorer physical and mental health, greater financial insecurity and decreased quality of life. For retirees, ageism often feels like being overlooked or underestimated, which can have a negative impact on wellbeing, thus making it harder to stay active, connected and enjoy life.
Ageism is a significant issue in Australia, affecting many aspects of society. According to the Australian Human Rights Commission, 90% of Australians believe it exists, with many having faced age-based prejudice.
For older people, the impact is particularly stark: a 2021 survey by EveryAGE Counts revealed that nearly half (45%) of people over the age of 50 experienced ageism, yet only 18% took action to address it. These statistics highlight why raising awareness and tackling ageism is so important in creating inclusive communities like ours.
Plus, this isn't an issue that's just for older people - it can go both ways. By raising awareness and fostering understanding between generations, we’re building communities that value and learn from everyone, no matter their age.
We all know that life doesn’t stop when you retire - in fact, it’s the start of an exciting new chapter! That’s why we’re working to tackle ageism head on, to create stronger, more inclusive communities where everyone can live life on their terms.
We’re proud to make sure ageism has no place in our villages. Here’s how:
Our resident wellbeing team hosts information sessions to help residents understand what ageism is and how it shows up in everyday life. These sessions encourage everyone to reflect on their attitudes and work together to encourage inclusivity in our villages.
Sonal, our National Resident Wellbeing Manager, shared some insights:
“We run education sessions with our team and residents to highlight how ageism can go both ways: young to old or old to young. These sessions, along with our intergenerational programs, are designed to challenge perceptions and foster understanding,” she explains.
“It’s something we continue to address through our language, communication and awareness efforts. I often reframe and respectfully challenge statements like, ‘That person is too old to do that,’ or ‘They’re elderly, so surely they shouldn’t be doing that.’ These are examples that can be perceived as ageism."

Bringing people of different ages together is a great way to break down stereotypes. Our intergenerational activities give residents the chance to connect with younger people, share stories and learn from one another. It’s a win-win, helping to build respect and understanding for everyone involved.

Words matter. Hearing comments like “You’re too old for that” is a chance to challenge those ideas and reframe the conversation. Even small shifts in how we speak can help break down stereotypes and change attitudes for the better.
