Keyton hosts it's first Housing, Health and Happiness Roundtable

Thursday, 31 October 2024

A few weeks ago, Keyton hosted its first Housing, Health and Happiness Roundtable, an annual event that brings together experts in housing, health, policy and governance to explore the challenges of managing Australia’s ageing population.

One of the many important conversations had at the roundtable included how retirement villages can help solve the national housing crisis. Keyton CEO Nathan Cockerill shared, “Currently, there are around 250,000 Australians living in 2,500 retirement villages nationwide and when I speak to Keyton residents, the number one thing they tell me is it’s the best decision they’ve made in their life and they wish they had made it earlier.”

He highlighted the many positive effects of retirement communities released in recent research by the Retirement Living Council, including that retirement village residents are 41% happier, 19% less likely to require hospitalisation after only nine months, 15% more physically active, five times more socially active and have reduced levels of depression and loneliness.

“Creating communities where people can age in place while living healthier, more connected lives helps governments save money as the nation’s population ages by reducing demand for health services and delaying entry into aged care,” he concluded.

Nathan shared more of his thoughts how retirement villages can play a pivotal role in resolving the housing crisis in this current piece in The Australian. Read the full article via the link below.
