Teaching, learning and growing

Tuesday, 08 October 2024

The resident community at Keyton villages not only share spaces but also knowledge, skills and the joy of learning from one another.

Whether it's diving into tech, exploring art or enjoying everyday activities, the residents teach, guide and uplift one another, creating a strong community filled with opportunities and connections.

Here are some inspiring stories of residents who are sharing their knowledge and creativity as well as learning with their fellow residents across our villages, one lesson at a time!

The tech-savvy residents

One key to ageing well is adapting to changing times. Residents at Brentwood Village have taken it upon themselves to empower each other and stay on top of their tech game. A group of five tech-savvy residents volunteers to run a computer club, offering friendly, hands-on support to those eager to learn the basics of technology. From navigating the internet to setting up email accounts, this club serves as a lifeline for residents looking to stay connected. Their enthusiasm and patience have helped many overcome digital barriers and provide opportunities to explore and communicate.

Sharing faith and music

Robyn, a resident of Glenaeon Retirement Village and a former Olympian torch bearer, reflects the spirit of sharing by teaching scripture and playing the piano for her church community. Every week through her lessons, she not only imparts knowledge but also connects deeply with others, providing comfort and inspiration through her music.

Self-taught mosaic art

When you’re open to learning and teaching, it often leads to a journey of self-discovery. Lyn from Henry Kendall Gardens knows this well. She turned her passion for art into a personal exploration, teaching herself mosaic art through YouTube videos. “You can learn just about anything from the internet!” Her journey has since inspired others to embrace their creativity, showing that it’s never too late to pick up something new and share it with friends.

The bonsai masterclass

Keith at Lakeside Village found a wonderful way to combine his love for bonsai trees with a desire to teach others. He applied for the Resident Activity Program, ‘Ignite Your Passion' grant to turn his idea into reality. By starting a bonsai group in his village community, he has created a space where residents can come together to learn the art of caring for these beautiful plants. What began as a simple idea has turned into a close-knit community of bonsai enthusiasts who gather to share their knowledge and cultivate a sense of belonging and connection.

Painting with passion

Ross, a resident of Elliot Gardens, has a unique talent for teaching painting. He has brought his love for the art to teach and encourage others to discover their hidden artistic abilities. “I love it that 99% of the people I’ve taught here have come to me and said, ‘I don’t think I’m going to be any good at it,’ but I reassure them by saying, “By the time you’ve finished learning, you will be.” Because of his guidance and positivity, many residents have now found confidence in their creativity, proving that art is for everyone willing to learn.
